PUERTO ESCONDIDO: THE BEST BACKPACKING DESTINATION IN MEXICO
Puerto Escondido is one of the best locations in Mexico for surfers, backpackers, and digital nomads. Its pristine beaches, perfect waves, and laid-back vibe create a paradise for adventure seekers, beach bums, and even those mixing work with play.
I booked my trip with little notice and little planning. After a rough few months, I knew I needed a change of pace and a place to reset and feel inspired. I had heard of Puerto Escondido in the backpacking community and decided to book a one-way ticket. I ended up staying for three weeks and finding more peace than ever before. Ask anyone who has been and they will undoubtedly tell you about the magic that exists in the salty air of the Oaxacan Coast.
Why should you visit Puerto Escondido?
Surfing
Puerto Escondido is renowned as the “Mexican Pipeline” and is considered one of the best surf spots not only in Mexico but in the world! It’s no secret why surfers are drawn here. Even if you’ve never caught a wave before, this is a perfect place to grab a board and try it out for yourself.
Budget Friendly
The price is right for backpackers and digital nomads especially if you eat and travel like a local, finding authentic eateries and taking collectivos instead of taxis. Even an “expensive” taxi ride is still only a dew U.S. Dollars.
Authentic Mexican Experience
While growing in popularity, Puerto Escondido is still far enough off the beaten path to offer the authentic Mexican experience. Wonder slightly away from the tourist activities and you will find bustling markets, local eateries, and locals that are extremely welcoming.
One of my favorite words I learned in Puerto Escondido is “bigote” which is Spanish for mustache. One day as I was leaving my hostel, I got a little lost walking through the dirt streets with both of my backpacks. I found myself on a local street walking by houses with barking dogs and I met a man outside of his house working on his car. He had a sombreo and the coolest mustache I had ever seen. I was nervous and feeling out of place, but as soon as I said hola with a smile, he gave me the warmest welcome. We chatted a little with my minimal Spanish. As I tried to tell him I liked his mustache, he taught me the word and gave me directions to where I was headed.
The Vibe
It’s hard to put the feeling of Puerto into words. The energy here is undeniable. After a few days, I began feeling so much joy and calmness. I connected with other travelers, expanding my mind and my worldview in a way that gave me so much clarity and peace. Among travelers, it is said that Puerto shows you want you didn’t know you needed. I didn’t have expectations, but being there healed me in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
It also has a robust nightlife scene. Hostels are bustling with activity after dark and so are the various nightclubs. I didn’t seek out these experiences while I was there, but if this is something you are looking for — it will be easy to find!
From the surfer to the yogi, to the partying backpacker — there is a place for everyone.
How to get to Puerto Escondido
The easiest way to get to Puerto Escondido is to fly into Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). Flights within Mexico are typically very affordable. If you are backpacking throughout Mexico or want to take an even cheaper scenic route, you can take the bus.
When you fly into PXM, it will be very easy to get a taxi. Only verified taxis are allowed into the airport, so you can be sure they are legit. Many accommodations also offer a shuttle or taxi service that you can schedule in advance if you don’t want to worry about the hassle of having Mexican pesos on hand. They do have one ATM at the airport, but I wouldn’t count on it working. At a very minimum, come with cash even if it is in your country’s currency (many people accept USD).
How much should the taxi cost?
When I arrived in October 2023, 300 pesos was the going rate for a ride from the airport to Zicatela. If you don’t mind a short walk, you can walk out of the airport and down the hill. There will be a dozen or so taxis waiting there. You can get a much cheaper rate from them with a little bargaining.
Best Neighborhoods and Beaches
Zicatella
Powerful waves and a lively atmosphere. Even if you’re not catching waves, the beach’s energy is infectious. Depending on the time of year, this is not a good surfing beach. If you want to swim or are just learning to surf, opt for La Punta or Carrizalillo.
If you are a digital nomad, this is the best area to stay. The internet and the power are much more reliable and there are plenty of food options and even a beachside gym within walking distance.
La Punta
A beachside neighborhood with a distinct charm. The waves at La Punta are more forgiving than those at Zicatela, making it an ideal spot for both beginners and seasoned surfers.
You’ll also find an array of beachside cafes, yoga studios, and boutique shops. Spend a day exploring the sandy streets where barefoot walks are the norm, and vibrant street art adds character. As the sun sets over the Pacific, La Punta comes alive with a lively yet intimate nightlife scene, where travelers and locals gather to share stories and enjoy the simple pleasures of beachside living.
Carrizalillo Beach
A secluded and picturesque cove, surrounded by lush cliffs and turquoise waters. Walk down a charming staircase full of artwork to find this relaxing spot perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or learning to surf. This was one of my favorite spots that I came back to time and time again. The water was so clear and light blue it reminded me of Hawaii!
Playa Bacocho
A tranquil coastal retreat. The golden sands seem to stretch on forever along the Pacific offering plenty of space to spread out and find a peaceful secluded spot. This is also a popular location to watch turtles hatch.
Where to Stay
Selena Hostel in Zicatella
Best for digital nomads and long term stays. This is where I stayed for two weeks! The internet is reliable and a good mix of party and getting work done.
Che Hostel in La Punta
La Punta is the place to be for the vibes! Just a short distance from Zicatella, but where you will find the cutest shops, restaurants and co-working spaces. However, the power and internet is not as reliable here and this hostel in particular is definitely the spot to party — not work.
